Today we launch the 10-year edition of our first graphic novel, Billy y las Botas!
But this isn’t just some reprint.
This edition is so different, it deserved a brand new cover:
From music video to graphic novel
Billy y las Botas began as a Señor Wooly music video. It tells the story of Billy, a sad scarf who never gets used. One cold winter day, he finally gets taken out on an adventure, falls to the ground, and meets a pair of boots.
When I adapted the story into our first graphic novel, I had the chance to tell a much bigger version of it. The book spends much more time on Billy’s life before he meets the boots, including why he’s so dissatisfied with it. It also restores the ending I originally planned for the story, but wasn’t able to include in the music video.
So what changed?
When I sat down to write this book 10 years ago, I had never written a comic, and there were almost none for students learning Spanish. I had to figure it out as I went.
The original edition was a huge success, selling over 30,000 copies. But I kept hearing the same thing from teachers:
They weren't wrong.
After publishing seven other books, I finally had the experience to come back and do this one right.
The original edition was written for Novice High or Intermediate Low. This new one is Novice Low, built for first-year students.

Teaching with a graphic novel isn’t always obvious. How do you pace it? Which visuals do you turn into language, and which do you leave alone?
So we created a full 5-day lesson plan specifically for this Novice Low edition. Each day includes 4 activities, plus assessments and extensions.

Yes, but not right away.
For now, the new edition of Billy y las Botas is only available in print, and the lesson plan is sold separately. We need time to rewrite all levels, make new Nugget activities, and record new audio.
We’re planning a release as part of the subscription in early 2027.
For now, I’m just excited to have this new version out in the world.
