We decided to do something a little experimental here at Wooly. And, frankly, it's either the best idea we've ever had or the worst. Or maybe somewhere in the middle. I'll let you decide.
First of all, we made an absolutely hilarious new graphic novel which I'll talk about momentarily. But that's actually not the experimental part.
Let me explain.

Part 1:
A graphic novel prequel to ¿Puedo ir al baño?
|
|
When Justin sang ¿Puedo ir al baño? to his teacher, most people assumed it was simply a relatable tale of a student desperately needing to use the bathroom.
However, as is often the case in the world of Wooly, there was far more happening under the surface than anyone realized.
It's finally time to learn the shocking answer to the question that, for over 10 years, no one even considered asking: Why did Justin need to go to the bathroom?

La lucha de la limonada is the most accessible graphic novel we have ever published.
At 20 pages, it's incredibly short. You could easily cover this entire book in a single class period or stretch it out for a few days.
It will appeal to all ages, even elementary. We've piloted this story with elementary, middle, and high school students, and everyone found the story to be engaging, easy-to-read, and laugh-out-loud funny (literally).
The language is appropriate for all levels of Spanish. All of them. We're getting to the experimental part, so please keep reading.
It's inexpensive. In fact, it's the most inexpensive graphic novel we've ever released.
The story is really fun. Our mission statement for the 2021-22 school year is to lean into things that bring joy and help build classroom community. We think this story fits the bill.

Part 2:
Appropriate for all levels of Spanish?!
|
|
If you've been following Wooly over the last year, you know that we re-wrote all of our graphic novels at 4 different proficiency levels to meet the needs of all readers. However, these multiple levels were only released digitally.
Despite many requests to print the other levels, the logistics remain too daunting.
But sometimes you just have to throw your hands up and say, "Let's just give this thing a shot."
We have printed a very small batch each level of La lucha de la limonada, and all 4 levels are on sale today.

For students in Spanish 1
There is probably no easier reader out there for Spanish students in existence than this book.
Between the incredibly simple and repetitive language, the context provided by the gorgeous imagery, and the per-page glossary, all students who want to understand this book will understand it.

For students in Spanish 2
Still a very easy read, but sentences are a little longer and structures are a little more complex.
Students who successfully read the Novice Low version will find this an accessible step up in difficulty.

Still simple and repetitive in all the right spots, but the language flows a little more naturally, allowing the snarky humor to shine.

Calling it an upper level text doesn't mean that we needlessly make it hard! We only use more complex language when doing so allows the language to feel more natural, more textured, and more humorous.

Will this Baño prequel graphic novel be released digitally and included in Wooly subscription?
|
|
Yes, it definitely will! All 4 versions will eventually be released digitally, and as long as you have an active subscription with Wooly, you'll get it for no additional cost.
However, due to the inclusion of the audio and the nuggets, it takes a little longer to get the digital story ready. La lucha de la limonada will be digitally released in January 2022.
At this time, this story is only available via these physical books.

Is the story exactly the same at all 4 levels?
|
|
The overarching story is the same. However, this is not a situation where we simply made the dialogue more difficult through lexical scaffolding.
Instead, we literally changed what characters say to better fit the needs of different readers, and to provide a more textured story as the levels increase. Check out the difference between a single panel in Level 1 vs Level 4:

LEVEL 4 (INTERMEDIATE LOW)

Does this mean that you're going to print the 4 proficiency levels for ALL of the older graphic novels?
|
|
No. Maybe? Probably not. Definitely not. We'll see.
We're going to start with La lucha de la limonada to see if there's a demand. If not, well, chalk it up to an interesting experiment!
If there is a high demand, then we'll consider our options. In all honesty, though, we make no promises. For now, please consider this a fun little experiment.

What if you sell out of these Limonada books? Will you print more?
|
|
This is a very small, initial run of books, and we anticipate selling out of at least some of the proficiency levels within a few days. We'll make a decision at that time.

Do students needs to be familiar with the video ¿Puedo ir al baño? in order to read this book?
|
|
Yes, this book is very much written for people who know that video. In fact, I predict that La lucha de la limonada will become an essential companion piece for that video.
Plus, I made a point of including a lot of the video's language in the story. Here's a screenshot of a panel from the Level 1 text:

How durable are these books?
|
|
The books are staple-bound paperbacks (or "floppies" as they say in the comic book world).
However, we have a reputation for making some of the sturdiest, best-looking books around, and we didn't cut back on quality with these books. They may be floppies, but the covers are laminated, the pages are thick, and we promise you'll be impressed by the quality when you hold the book in your hands.

When will this book ship?

|
It will ship immediately. When we sell out, we will assess next steps.
And no matter what, we promise that this story will be available digitally for everyone in January.
