We rebuilt Billy for French.
These aren’t the Spanish videos with French audio dropped on top. We went back into the original source files and reanimated the characters’ mouths to match the French lyrics.
More than 100 pieces of artwork were changed for the French versions, too. Billy even visits the Louvre now.
Billy, en français.
The Billy materials were translated and adapted by native French speakers who also understand the needs of language learners.

Billy is a graphic novel, too.
|
Billy et les bottes is a 52-page, full-color French graphic novel that expands Billy’s story with new dialogue, new character moments, action sequences, and the original ending that was cut from the video. Written at the Novice High level, it can be read independently or paired with the videos. Explore the Billy graphic novel → |

Who translated these Billy materials into French?
I had the pleasure of working with the excellent translator, Agnès Denvir, a native speaker of France as well as a French teacher. Not only is her language impeccable, but she also knows how to pare down the language to essential high-frequency structures. Additional translations were made by Cécile Lainé, another native speaker and French teacher. -
What age group does the story of Billy appeal to?
Billy la bufanda has been used successfully in elementary through high school for years. Some teachers assume it's just for young kids since the imagery does seem like it's targeting younger audiences. However, although the story is perfectly appropriate for elementary, the humor is much more targeted to middle school and high school. -
Are these music videos just carbon copies of the Spanish versions but with new audio tracks?
I'm so glad you asked! Absolutely not! These French videos are the results of months of work. We actually went back into the original source files, reanimated the mouths to match the French lyrics, and changed over 100 pieces of artwork! Billy even visits the Louvre now!
