What level is the book?
The French edition is written at the Novice High level and is designed for second-language learners.
Do students need to know the Billy videos first?
No. The graphic novel can be read completely on its own. Students who already know one or more of the Billy videos will recognize characters and story elements, but prior knowledge isn’t required.
Is it just the music video in book form?
No. The graphic novel adds new dialogue, character moments, and action sequences, along with the restored original ending that was cut from the video.
Does the book have a glossary?
Yes. A French-to-English glossary is included at the back of the book and organized by page, making it easy for students to find vocabulary support while they read.

Who translated these Billy materials into French?
I had the pleasure of working with the excellent translator, Agnès Denvir, a native speaker of France as well as a French teacher. Not only is her language impeccable, but she also knows how to pare down the language to essential high-frequency structures. Additional translations were made by Cécile Lainé, another native speaker and French teacher. -
What age group does the story of Billy appeal to?
Billy la bufanda has been used successfully in elementary through high school for years. Some teachers assume it's just for young kids since the imagery does seem like it's targeting younger audiences. However, although the story is perfectly appropriate for elementary, the humor is much more targeted to middle school and high school. -
